Hi Rita!
Here's the statement I wrote to go along with the sculpture at the show:

"While hunting thrift stores for ceramics, I noticed many representations of meat animals, like cows, pigs, chickens and sheep, as decoration for the kitchen and depicted on dinnerware. I started thinking about serving bacon on a platter depicting a happy pig or cooking a steak while looking at a ceramic cow in a chef’s cap. It could be meaningless kitsch, or it could be a commentary on how we feel about our food, animals, or meat.

The animal I have created is a play on the idea of how science could help create ethical sources for meat. There have been some recent stories about meat grown in labs from animal cells - the idea being that because the cells don’t have true consciousness, the source is more ethical than current or traditional methods. I followed the same train of thought, and created a headless creature made with the most popular meat sources from each animal."

The purpose of the piece is not really to sway the viewer one direction or another- it's really just meant to get people thinking about their food, where it comes from, and how they feel about it.
