Read more about the sculpture below. This piece was a part of the Nasty Women Exhibition at the Knockdown Center in Queens, New York. It was thrilling to see that this exhibit raised nearly $50,000 for Planned Parenthood and several other charity groups over the weekend of January 13-15, and equally thrilling to see my piece featured in the Hyperallergic article about the exhibit. Here is my artist statement that accompanied the sculpture: I normally work with repurposed secondhand ceramic figurines, so I am always rescuing them from thrift stores. I found this figurine of an angry boy several months ago and brought him to my studio. While I worked and listened to NPR news, the childish anger on his face seemed more and more like Donald Trump. After the news broke about the “grab them by the pussy” comment, all I could imagine was this angry Trump-child being assaulted by, obviously, giant pussies. I haven’t made a piece of overtly political art since the Iraq war started, but this wouldn't leave my mind. After a few alterations to his clothing, a treatment in orange-face, and a couple of cats, there you have it: poetic justice, parody, Pussies Grabbing Back.
