Read more about the sculpture below. This piece was a part of the Nasty Women Exhibition at the Knockdown Center in Queens, New York. It was thrilling to see that this exhibit raised nearly $50,000 for Planned Parenthood and several other charity groups over the weekend of January 13-15, and equally thrilling to see my piece featured in the Hyperallergic article about the exhibit. Here is my artist statement that accompanied the sculpture: I normally work with repurposed secondhand ceramic figurines, so I am always rescuing them from thrift stores. I found this figurine of an angry boy several months ago and brought him to my studio. While I worked and listened to NPR news, the childish anger on his face seemed more and more like Donald Trump. After the news broke about the “grab them by the pussy” comment, all I could imagine was this angry Trump-child being assaulted by, obviously, giant pussies. I haven’t made a piece of overtly political art since the Iraq war started, but this wouldn't leave my mind. After a few alterations to his clothing, a treatment in orange-face, and a couple of cats, there you have it: poetic justice, parody, Pussies Grabbing Back. If you've always loved fantastic creatures and you've imagined having one of your own, I can help you bring your idea to reality. Because I create my sculptures from figurines that I find, there are lots of different options for commissioned works. I can create sculpture from an existing figurine that you provide, or figurines that I obtain, or a combination of the two. There are virtually endless possibilities for what can be created.
Here are some of the many options: Hybrids: two or more different animals blended together Additions: Horns, fangs, longer neck or legs, extra arms Replacements: moving one part of a figurine to another area (i.e. moving ears to the back of an animal to look like wings) Pictured on this page are a few of the custom commissions I've created for clients. If you're curious about having one of your own let's talk! You can email me here. I have work in two shows in Los Angeles and one show in Austin this November! Here are the details:
